Veneers, the thin porcelain layers placed on the fronts of the teeth, can be done on just one or a number of teeth. Generally, people have veneers done on their front teeth. These are the teeth that people notice the most and show when you smile.
If you decide to have veneers done, it will take two dental visits (after the initial consultation). The time of each visit will depend on how many teeth are being done. Each tooth veneer is made to fit over your existing tooth exactly and time has to be taken to ensure the most natural fit.
The first visit generally involves removing a thin layer of the enamel from the front side of your teeth. This is so that the veneers will fit and look natural. If enamel were not removed, the veneers would look and feel bulky. After the impression of your teeth has been made at this visit, it is sent to the dental lab for the construction of the veneers.
The second visit is the actual bonding of the veneers. Each tooth veneer is bonded to the front of the natural tooth. When completed, the new look will be stronger and whiter!
Veneers are sometimes done as an alternative to orthodontics (braces) to close spaces between teeth and/or make them appear straighter.
